Providing life protection is part of this mix of services provided by the department. Postal life insurance was introduced on 1 February 1884. It started as a welfare scheme for the benefit of postal workers and later in 1888, it was extended to employees of the Telegraph Department.
In 1894, the PLI included women employees of the erstwhile Postal and Telegraph Department in insurance protection at a time when no other insurance company worked towards women's life protection. It is the oldest life insurer in this country. Over the years, PLI has grown from a few hundred policies in 1884 to more than 43.59 lakh policies by 31.03.2018. It is now central and state governments, central and state public sector undertakings, universities, government-aided educational institutions, nationalized banks, local bodies, autonomous bodies, joint ventures with minimum 10% government / public sector undertakings, credit cooperatives Provides protection to employees, etc. The PLI also provides insurance cover to officers and employees of the defence services and paramilitary forces. Apart from individual insurance policies, the Postal Life Insurance Directorate also administers a group insurance scheme for additional departmental employees of the Department of Posts, i.e., Gramin Dak Sevaks (EDAGIS-1992 and GDSGIS-2010).
Rural Postal Life Insurance (RPLI) was started as per the recommendation of the official committee (Malhotra Committee) set up to improve the insurance sector. The Committee observed in 1993 that only 22% of the insurable population in this country was insured and the Life Insurance Fund had only a 10% share in the GDP. In view of the committee: "The committee understands that rural branch postmasters who are in a trustworthy position in the community have the ability to promote the life insurance business in their respective areas ……." The government accepted this recommendation and introduced postal life insurance, mainly due to the huge network of post offices in rural areas and low cost of operation, with effect from 24.3.1995, to expand its coverage in rural areas for conducting life insurance business. Allowed to expand.
The main objective of this scheme is to provide insurance protection to the rural masses in general and to benefit the weaker sections and women workers in rural areas in particular and also to spread insurance awareness among the rural population. The Department of Posts has started this task entrusted by the Central Government with utmost dedication and honesty and has made a very positive impact on the rural public in a very short period. Any person living in rural areas can avail Rural Postal Life Insurance. It is a boon for migrant labourers and artisans and the unorganized sector, who go to urban areas for employment but remain connected to their rural base. Workers migrating abroad are also eligible for one of its policies. RPLI (Rural Postal Life Insurance) now has more than 143 lakh policies as on 31.03.2018.
